Shamim Modi Granted Bail

Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday granted bail to Shamim Modi (शमीम मोदी), Madhya Pradesh state vice president of the Samajwadi Jan Parishad and social activist, after twenty-two days in prison, Adv. Joshi Jacob, All India vice president of the Samajwadi Jan Parishad said. She was arrested in gross violation of democratic rights on 10th February 2009 from her residence at Harda, Madhya Pradesh. and is presently lodged in Hoshaganbad jail.

She was arrested within 24 hours following a 48-hour ultimatum by the Harda Industries Association and Vyapari Sangh demanding her arrest. Shamim has been involved in the struggle of the saw mill workers and the hammals (kulies) who have been denied the minimal legal entitlements. She was fighting against the nexus between politicians and forest mafia.
