Lingaraj Azad was granted bail by the Bhawanipatna SDJM court in Kalahandi district on Monday, March 11.

Kalahandi, March 11, 2019: The Bhawanipatna SDJM court today rejected the bail plea of Lingaraj Azad, activist and adviser of Niyamgiri Suraksha Samiti.

Azad, a known tribal rights campaigner was arrested by police on Wednesday for allegedly possessing arms, supporting the Maoists and mobilising other tribal leaders against mining in Lanjigarh.

Azad has also been charged for staging a protest demonstration outside the Vedanta alumina refinery on the foothills of Niyamgiri. A case had been registered at Lanjigarh police station in April 2017 in this connection. Another case has also been registered against him for holding rallies and threatening the police against setting up of proposed CRPF camp at Trilochanpur.

Meanwhile, many activists, including Prafulla Samantara demanded immediate release of Azad. Several social activists and tribals have also staged demonstration in different parts of the State demanding his unconditional release.
